 The last walk of your life

 The Long Walk is a Stephen King adaptation released in 2025, set in a dystopian America, The Long Walk is a game of sorts in this universe. They allow any man, mostly boys to sign up and risk their lives to walk for the USA and what they believe in. But why walking? This movie is an allegory for the war and what it could've created, a fascist America. The game is played by walking at a certain pace, fall below it and you get a warning, get three and you get your “ticket” in front of the millions of Americans watching. With no bathroom breaks, no spot to eat your rations, and no way to stop, you walk until there's one left. But is the one person left standing really winning? Or are they playing the fascists game and giving them what system wants. 

The long walk takes place near the Maine and Canadian border, spanning through the edge of the state. Although the setting does matter within the movie, the main focus is the game. 50 boys ranging in ages 18 to 21 are in this years slow moving race, with one boy supposedly lying about his age. All they get is rations as they walk at a minimum pace of 3 mile per hour and no bathroom break or a way of basic hygiene. The boys one by one say goodbye to their loved ones, if they have any and prepare for the game start. Each boy gets assigned a number however death doesn’t care for order.  

What death inevitably does is walk amongst them and is the only one that wins from this devious “game.” The first to go is Curly, the boy who lied, he was 13 years old and is the first kill of the movie and the book, as well as the first kill seen by our characters. His death soiled the lighthearted start of the game and confirmed the seriousness of what they’re walking against. 

While this movie is a rollercoaster of emotions, we didn’t quite know what we signed up for, just like the boys in the film. They knew but at the same time everyone expected to be the winner, to be the one to make it out. I won’t spoil the winner but everyone involved is a loser. There is no true winner of this hateful game, just lives lost and sons dying in gruesome ways while their wives and mothers watch in agony. Death will always win.

This movie made me feel a deep sense of fear, happiness, and sadness all wrapped up in 108 minutes of pure cinema. To think that even in times of despair and anguish, humans will always have the ability to make friends with each other. Even while knowing there can only be one winner, the main group forms what they call "The Musketeers.
